THE LITERATURE OF SPAIN AND LATIN AMERICA IN THE WORLD

At certain times in history the literatures of Spain and Latin America have had an important impact on the development of literature in the world at large. Poets such as Federico García Lorca, Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz are today among the classics of modern world poets, while the oeuvres of prose writers like Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa aroused in the 1960s unprecedented levels of interest in the literature of South America. What is the status of Spanish and Latin American literatures on the world stage today? What changes have been wrung by the autonomous regions of Spain on the one hand and the new Hispanic voices making themselves heard in the United States on the other? Which books address the reader of today, and why? And what is the effect of economic and cultural globalization on European publishing schemes?
Moderated by: Mercedes Monmany de la Torre (Spain)
Participants: Anežka Charvátová (Czech Republic), Anna Housková (Czech Republic), Amanda Hopkinson (United Kingdom), Márta Patak (Hungary), Tomasz Pindel (Poland), Simona Škrabec (Catalonia, Spain)
